Opal is mined in different areas of central Autralia including:

- Lightning Ridge in New South Wales
- Mintabie, Andamooka and Coober Pedy in
  South Australia
- Quilpie and Winton in Queensland


The character and colour of opal which is proudly 'National Gemstone of Australia' varies dramatically depending upon the area from which it originates.
